A short route with a long way home: a rugged afternoon hike to the waterfall the host describes as Yangmingshan National Park’s second-largest, plus time near 老梅冷泉. Come for cold spring water and a green escape; come prepared for a remote trail, limited transport, and a late return.
Route reality
This is rated 3 / 10, but it is not a casual stroll. Expect 4K of trail followed by 6K of paved downhill country road to the nearest bus stop. Listed ascent/descent: 397m / 767m. The trail portion takes about 4.5 hours, with roughly 1 hour for waterfall and lunch breaks.
Most of the trail is rugged, with a few steep paved stone steps. It can be slippery after rain. The final 6K is downhill, but it is still a walk on the road and may run into dusk or evening.
Transport runs on time
The meeting point is Tamsui MRT Exit #2. Bring an EasyCard and cash for shared expenses such as dinner or taxis.
Pack like there are no shops—because there aren’t
In the remote area, expect no cell phone signal, no 7-11, and limited bus service. Stay with the group.
Lunch and snacks — important; there are no shops
2L–3L of water
EasyCard and cash
Umbrella or raincoat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent
Headlamp for the late walk out
Optional: power bank
Wildlife and personal responsibility
Watch for snakes, hornets, and leeches. Do not swat at hornets. If hornets attack, run away immediately as fast as you can. Do not hike drunk.
Leaving early or moving faster is only for people prepared to navigate their own return from the woods. The organizers are not responsible for private schedules. No-shows without a valid reason, late cancellations, and repeated offenses may lead to being blocked or banned from the group.
Return plan
From 老梅, the bus to Tamsui MRT takes about one hour. Expect a late return.
