Thursday night in Zhongshan. Downstairs on Yitong Street, there's a room full of people from Taiwan and all over the world who'd rather swap languages over a game than practice alone with an app.

You don't need to bring an opener. The games break the ice for you, the conversations go wherever they go, and you'll probably mix up a tone or two. Everyone does, and that's half the fun. ;)

What actually happens

• Meet new people. You'll talk with locals and internationals at the same table.

• Practice languages. Use whatever you're learning and help someone else with yours.

• Play games. It's a social game party, so there's no lecture and no name-tag speed rounds.

• Find your footing in Taiwan. If you just landed, it's an easy way to meet people who know the city.
