Moving to a city of 2.6 million people and still eating dinner alone on a Friday is very common. Fixing that takes one evening.
How the night goes
Swap languages. Practice the Mandarin you've been rehearsing in your head, or help someone finally get English idioms. Everyone is a beginner at something here, and that's what makes it easy.
Get past small talk. "Where are you from?" is fine for the first five minutes. After that, the conversations get deeper: why you came to Taipei, what you miss, what you'd never leave behind.
Keep it going. When the talking part winds down, the after-party starts. It's a good chance to turn a fun conversation into an actual friend.
Who shows up
Travelers passing through, people who just moved here, and locals curious about the rest of the world. You don't need a language level or a plan, and you can come alone. Most people do.
