Someone's halfway through a sentence in Mandarin, totally stuck on a word, when a cat strolls across the table and sits right on the game cards. Everyone laughs. Somebody helps with the word. And just like that, four strangers have something in common.

That's the whole idea: an underground cat café on Jinan Road, a table of new people and a few social games to break the ice for you.

What you'll actually do

• Meet people. It's a mix of internationals and locals, so you'll talk with people you'd never cross paths with otherwise.

• Practice a language. Bring your shaky Chinese, your rusty English or whatever you're working on. Mistakes are welcome here, because that's how the practice happens.

• Play. The games get you talking, so you don't have to come up with an opener.

If you just moved to Taiwan and you're still working out where people actually meet, this is a gentle way in. If you grew up here and want to practice speaking with people from abroad, you'll fit right in too.

Finding the café

It's on the basement level (B1) at 24-1, Section 2, Jinan Road. Look for the stairs going down.

Come by yourself or bring a friend, but leave the shyness at the top of the stairs. The cats don't care about your grammar, and nobody else will either. 🐾
